Philosophy

I firmly believe in Early Childhood Education. ECE involves children from birth to age 8. Young children need to have time to develop their social and emotional skills, so we will spend time working on respecting others, building friendships, and developing a strong sense of community. My feeling is that all students learn in different ways. I try to provide learning experiences that encompass all learning styles.

1st Grade Curriculum

Here are the highlights of what we will be working on throughout the year:

Religion

  • God created the world and everything in it
  • Sacraments
  • The Holy Spirit helps us
  • Understands concepts of Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter
  • Hosts prayer services
  • Recites 1st grade prayers

Reading

  • Comprehends stories read or listened to
  • Decodes new words
  • Recognizes sight words
  • Summarizes and retells stories
  • Makes predictions
  • Learns and shares information from reading
  • Retells beginning, middle, and end of stories

Math

  • Develops good number sense; counting
  • Knows addition and subtraction facts to 18
  • Understands place value, data, and graphs
  • Introduced to geometry and fractions
  • Measurement and probability
  • Begins to tell time and count money

Writing/Language Arts

  • Differentiates between short and long vowels
  • Names the beginning, middle, and ending sounds of words
  • Identifies a complete sentence
  • Identifies the naming part (noun), action part (verb), and descriptive parts (adjectives) of a sentence
  • Writes a complete sentence
  • Begins to write and revise short pieces

Science

  • Differentiates between the four seasons
  • Differentiates between living and nonliving things
  • Identifies solids, liquids, and gases
  • Predicts motion of moving objects
  • Understands how plants and animals depend on each other

Social Studies

  • Differentiates between town and country, city and suburb
  • Understands what a factory does
  • Identifies community workers
  • Knows that the USA is the country where we live
  • Knows that Canada and Mexico are countries that border the USA

Physical Education

  • Safety

Music
